Stephen Clegg Rowan

Stephen Clegg Rowan (25 December 1808–31 March 1890) was a Vice Admiral in the United States Navy, who served during the Mexican–American War and the American Civil War.
==Early life and career==

Born in Dublin, Ireland, Rowan came to the United States at the age of 10 and lived in Piqua, Ohio. Rowan was a graduate of Miami University. Appointed midshipman in the U.S. Navy on 1 February 1826 at the age of 17. Later, he took an active role in the Mexican-American War, serving as executive officer of the sloop during the capture of Monterey, California on 7 July 1846, and in the occupation of both San Diego and Los Angeles.〔
